An Open Letter to Andy Roddick following his loss in the US Open.

Dear Andy,

I’ve been following your career for quite some time. I remember when you were an up and comer with that mammoth serve. You had a fearless way about you and your striking resemblance to Stiffler gave you this subtle bad ass quality that I’m sure the ladies loved. You were the new kid on the block and when you broke through winning the U.S. Open there were high hopes for you.

But something happened along the way. That thing was most likely two things. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. I mean it’s not your fault that these two guys are two of the most gifted tennis player to ever play the game. These things happen man. It’s kind of like for those few seasons where Clyde Drexler was an unbelievable player but Michael Jordan was around so it didn’t matter. No one even noticed.

Wimbledon 2010: Which Records Still Remain Intact After Isner-Mahut?

23 June 2010

sports & media

The Wimbledon 2010 live blog has an delightful commentary of the longest match in Wimbledon history which is still not over and is tied 59-59, suspended after the second day of play.

7.20pm: And so this match goes on and on, on and on. Somewhere along the way, the players have mislaid their names. The man who was once Mahut is now a string-bag of offal. The man who was Isner is a parched piece of cow-hide. The surviving members of the audience don’t seem to care who wins. They just cheer and applaud whoever looks likely to make a breakthrough and bring this nightmare to a close. Invariably they are disappointed.

The offal looks fresher, possesses a piercing backhand and still throws itself about the court on occasion. But the cow-hide can serve and has the advantage of going ahead by one game and forcing the offal to catch-up. This the offal is only too happy to do. It hits a backhand down the line and then follows that up with an ace, and the score now stands at 45 games apiece.

WSJ: Few Are Coming to See Greece’s Modern Olympic Ruins

When the Olympic torch went out after the Athens Summer Games six years ago, the doors closed here, as well as at many of the 30-odd other sites built or renovated for the Olympics that summer.

The vacant venues, several of which dominate parts of the city’s renovated Aegean coastline, have become some of the most visible reminders of Greece’s age of excessive spending. Sites range from a softball stadium and kayaking facility to a beach volleyball stadium and a sailing marina.

As Greece sifts through the wreckage wrought by its enormous public debt, which sent tremors through world finance in recent months, the Athens Games are once again unifying this nation—this time as a target of criticism. They cost an estimated $7.4 billion to $14 billion, minor in light of the more than $370 billion of public debt, but that hasn’t mitigated the resentment.
